Testicular Pain
Longstanding and persistent testicular pain is most often encountered in men older than 35 years of age.
Underlying causes may include:
- Previous surgery or trauma to the groin or scrotum
- Mass lesions in the scrotum
- Longstanding scrotal infections
- Neurological conditions
In approximately 25% of cases, there may be no identifiable cause.
Treatment of testicular pain:
Pain is treated with anti-inflammatories, anti-convulsants and muscle relaxants.
Nerve blocks with local anaesthetic agents are also used. Pelvic floor muscle physiotherapy may also be helpful.
Surgery is only performed if other treatments have not yielded satisfactory results.
Surgery is most successful if directed at treating a potential cause of the pain. When there is no identifiable cause, surgical division of the nerves to the testis and as a last resort removal of the testis may be necessary.
